Common Misconceptions with Type 1 Diabetes:

There are several misconceptions or myths when it comes to any auto immune disease, but with Type 1 Diabetes, those misconceptions feel more like jokes to me. Like eating too much sugar causes Type 1, or cinnamon will cure you. Even the, you can’t eat that because it has sugar or just don’t eat carbs and you’ll be fine. And last but not least, it isn’t even hard, you just give yourself an insulin shot and move on with your day.

Does Eating too Much Sugar Cause Type 1 Diabetes?

No, eating too much sugar does not cause type 1 diabetes. With type 2 diabetes sharing the property of not enough insulin, I can see why people may get it confused. Type 2 Diabetes is the most common type with about 90%-95% of those with diabetes being type 2, it can be tied to lifestyle and obesity. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition that is not preventable and is not caused by any type of lifestyle.

Doesn’t Cinnamon Cure Type 1 Diabetes?

Unfortunately, no, cinnamon does not cure Type 1 Diabetes, if it did you would see me and all the diabetics downing some cinnamon. While it does show that it can improve insulin sensitivity, we still need insulin to live and manage it.

Why not Try having a Low-Carb Diet or no Sugar?

While a low-carb diet wouldn’t be the worst option, as a type 1 diabetic, carb counting to do the right amount of insulin is a more recommended way in management. The low-carb diet is more targeted to type 2 diabetics, which is effective in reducing A1C’s and promotes weight loss. As for sugar, it is lifesaving when we have hypos. I mean, I can say a juice box saved my life this morning, when I went as low as 54. So, sugar cannot be cut out fully.

Having Type 1 Diabetes isn’t Even Hard.

Uhm, what? What a ridiculous thing to think. Any autoimmune condition is hard to live with. You cannot just simply do an insulin shot and call it a day. There are so many things that go into being a type 1 diabetic. Several things you have to carry with you. It is mentally, emotionally, and physically exhausting. You make about 180-200 more decisions per day than someone without. You have to constantly know if you have enough of something, or decide whether you want to do something, knowing it may affect your blood sugar.

What Common Misconceptions with Type 1 Diabetes do You have?

Knowing these misconceptions, were you able to understand that T1D is not a simple condition. It cannot be cured with cinnamon or a change in lifestyle. But, I hope you do know that Type 1 Diabetes takes and takes, so once you know someone with it, and see the resilience it takes to continue each day, knowing you will never have a break, is truly a heavy thing. So, think before you speak. Do research about it, read my blogs! Try to be as knowledgeable as you can. It is okay to ask question, but do not say stuff like these, they can be hurtful.
